Less than two hours before the Israeli and Palestinian prime ministers were scheduled to meet today, an explosion rocked the West Bank city of Hebron in what appeared to be a suicide bombing. The Reuters news agency reported that one Jewish settler was killed and one was wounded, in addition to the bomber. There was no immediate claim of responsibility. Before the latest bombing, Israeli and Palestinian leaders expressed scant but lingering hope of finding an exit from 31 months of conflict. Ariel Sharon, Israel’s prime minister, and Mahmoud Abbas, the first Palestinian prime minister, are divided over how to proceed with the new international peace plan known as the road map.
