Liberian troops clashed with rebels trying to attack the hometown of President Charles Taylor as the government said it was ready to discuss a truce, military sources said Thursday. They said LURD rebels Wednesday tried to attack the town of Arthington, but had been confronted beforehand at Sass Town, 25 miles northwest of the capital Monrovia. “By yesterday evening, they were fighting in that place. LURD forces were trying to take a back route to Arthington,” said one source, who declined to be named, adding that about a dozen rebels were injured when they were ambushed. Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy (LURD) launched a revolt to oust Taylor more than three years ago and have pushed close to Monrovia several times.
