War-crimes prosecutors demanded Tuesday that Liberia hand over the corpse of an indicted Sierra Leone warlord, citing doubts that Sam Bockarie was really killed. Under Bockarie, Sierra Leone rebels became known for horrific violence that included slashing off limbs of women and children. Liberia has said Bockarie was shot dead last week as he resisted arrest by Liberian forces. Liberian Defense Minister Daniel Chea announced Monday that his country would release the body only after its own investigation into circumstances of the killing. Prosecutors for Sierra Leone’s U.N.-sanctioned war-crimes court demanded Liberian President Charles Taylor turn the corpse over to the court immediately. “This action can only be viewed as an attempt to obstruct the work of the court,” Alan White, chief prosecution investigator, said of Liberia’s delay.
