The Irish Examiner’s Web site on Tuesday morning appeared to be the victim of a cyber attack after an anti-US message appeared on some of its pages. The message, which some have construed as a political statement, said “fuck America.” At this point it remains unclear who the culprits behind the cyber graffiti are, nor is it clear their intent. The exact nature of the attack, at this point, also remains unclear, although a source says that a worm was the most likely culprit. It is thought that one of examiner.ie’s main Web servers was hit by the malware, which either defaced the site itself or created a backdoor via which crackers could upload the defacement. The source said that none of the Web site’s database servers, where the bulk of examiner.ie’s content is stored, were hit by the worm. “It doesn’t appear as though this was the work of some clever person trying to break into the site.
