Hamas Figure, 2 Others Killed in Gaza

Scattered violence in the Gaza Strip today claimed the lives of three Palestinians — a mentally disabled man shot by Israeli soldiers near a checkpoint, a militant leader killed by missiles fired from Israeli helicopters and a suicide bomber who blew himself up trying to crash his explosives-laden car into an Israeli tank — according to Palestinian witnesses and Israeli military spokesmen. The differing circumstances of each episode reflected the varied nature of the violence that continues as Secretary of State Colin L. Powell’s prepares to visit Israel and the Palestinian territories this weekend in an effort to restart negotiations aimed at ending the bloodshed. At about 3 a.m., Israeli soldiers fired on a 30-year-old Palestinian man wearing traditional Arab robes who was walking near a border crossing in the southern Gaza Strip.
