Three policemen were killed in tribal fighting in Bunia in eastern Congo on Friday and neighboring Uganda said recent violence there had sent some 150,000 terrified refugees streaming over its borders. Unconfirmed reports said 25 people had been killed in several days of violence centered on the town, 50 miles from Uganda, as rival Hema and Lendu tribes fight for supremacy amid a power vacuum left by departing Ugandan troops. Uganda appealed for international help to handle a potential humanitarian disaster because of people fleeing the clashes. ‘They are stranded, helpless and no action has been taken since the full extent of the problem was known on Thursday afternoon,’ Christine Aporu, state minister of disaster preparedness, said at a meeting with donors in Kampala.
