Indian forces killed five Muslim militants in an overnight gunbattle in the disputed region of Kashmir, police said on Thursday. One soldier was killed in the shootout in Budgam district in the western part of Jammu and Kashmir, where India is struggling to quell a 13-year revolt by Muslim rebels. New Delhi says the guerrillas receive training, support and funding from Pakistan; Islamabad says it only gives them moral support. U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage was due to hold talks in Islamabad on Thursday, and in New Delhi at the weekend, to encourage the nuclear rivals to build on a new thaw in ties. Violence has been rising in Kashmir since Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee said he would make a new and decisive bid for peace with Pakistan, which responded by offering immediate talks to end the 55-year dispute over the territory.
