A Polish-born suspected crime boss on trial in Vienna on charges he ordered the 2001 killing of a former Polish sports minister was found dead Wednesday in his prison cell. Jeremiasz Baranski, 57, was found dead at 5 a.m. (0300 GMT) in his cell, where he had hanged himself with his belt from a window latch, said Justice Ministry spokeswoman Elisabeth Zacharia. Baranski, an Austrian citizen, was charged with giving the order for the assassination of Jacek Debski, the former sports minister, by phone from Vienna. Debski was shot in the head in 2001 on a Warsaw street. Baranski made what appeared to be a first suicide attempt April 9, when he drank cleaning fluid. He was found unconscious in his cell at the time and was hospitalized, although doctors said his poisoning was not life-threatening. Full Story
