Indonesian prosecutors urged a court to pursue the treason trial of a frail Muslim cleric, a landmark case in the crackdown on radicals in the world’s most populous Muslim nation, and ignore complaints from the defense. Lawyers for Abu Bakar Bashir, the alleged leader of the militant Jemaah Islamiah network, last week argued the charges were unclear and said the Central Jakarta Court had no right to hear the case because none of the crimes occurred in its jurisdiction. “It’s proper for the panel of judges to reject the argument from the defense because it has no basis,” chief prosecutor Hasan Madani told the court at the trial’s third hearing.
