Former paramilitary fighters burned down municipal buildings and took a provincial governor hostage in rural Guatemala Monday, demanding to be paid for fighting alongside the army during the country’s 1960-96 civil war. About 1,000 protesters converged on the town of San Francisco Zapotitlan, demanding to see the governor after their names were not on a list to receive payments. San Francisco Zapotitlan is 120 miles southwest of the capital, Guatemala City. When the governor, Fernando Tercero, arrived, the protesters took him prisoner and demanded their names be added to the lists, said Rodolfo de Leon, a spokesman for authorities in western Suchitepequez province.
