Massacre in Sicilian town hall

A gunman has shot dead the mayor of the Sicilian town of Aci Castello and four other people. A huge manhunt was organised, with carabinieri paramilitary police guarding entrances to the town, and a search helicopter flying overhead. However, police said the man later shot himself dead in a Catholic church near the town of Vittoria 100 kilometres from the scene of the attack. Most of the town’s residents have barricaded themselves inside their houses in fear. The gunman shot dead Mayor Michele Toscano and a councillor in the town hall. On his way out, he shot dead a 66-year-old pensioner who was sitting on the main square. He then killed two female municipal staff in nearby offices. A sixth person was wounded and taken to hospital for treatment. Full Story
