The leader of the IRA’s political ally Sinn Fein gave a crucial commitment on Wednesday that the guerrilla group would carry out no activities to undermine Northern Ireland’s peace process.
“The IRA leadership is determined that there will be no activities which will undermine in any way the peace process and the Good Friday Agreement,” Gerry Adams told a news conference in an attempt to break the logjam in the peace process. “The IRA leadership makes it clear in its statement that it is determined that its activities will be consistent with its resolve to see the complete and final closure of the conflict,” Adams said of an IRA statement already shown to the governments of Ireland and Britain. Sinn Fein’s move was aimed at ensuring Northern Irish assembly elections go ahead as planned next month.
