The security forces have arrested 150 would-be suicide bombers since the start of the intifada in September 2000, a senior officer in the operations wing of the General Staff told the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee yesterday. Some 23 potential bombers, including six women, were arrested in the past two months, he added. The officer said Israel’s prisons are housing about 5,000 Palestinians suspected of involvement in acts of terror or membership in terror organizations. He said the Israel Defense Forces’ counter-terrorism operations had resulted in a significant fall-off in acts of terror in recent months: there were no attacks in February; three in March; and only two this month.
