The public lacks faith in the police system. Eleven suspected robbers have been beaten to death by an angry mob in northern Bangladesh. Hundreds of villagers set upon the men with iron rods and bamboo sticks after homes were burgled in the northern district of Mymensingh, police said. Five other suspected robbers were rescued by police and are seriously injured. Mob justice is common in Bangladesh, where police are accused of being slow to respond to crimes, particularly in rural areas. More than 100 public lynchings were carried out last year alone. Earlier this year, in a particularly gory incident, five suspected criminals had their eyes gouged out by a huge crowd in the capital, Dhaka.
