The IRA is prepared to carry out an act of disarmament if there is a “positive response” from the British and Irish Governments and Ulster Unionist Party, Sinn Fein has said. Party leader Gerry Adams said the IRA’s statement to the governments was one of “peaceful intent”. Speaking at a news conference in Belfast on Sunday, he said the parties had reached “a defining moment” in the process. The choreography towards a deal – including a meeting of the Ulster Unionist Council – was still achievable, he said. However, the UUP branded the statement a disappointment and said it fell “short of what is required”. The Northern Ireland Assembly is due to be dissolved at midnight on Sunday as efforts continue to find a breakthrough in the stalled process. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/2979875.stm
