President Hamid Karzai said today that he had won assurances from Pakistan that it would try to stem the violent attacks across the border that Taliban and other rebels have been carrying out against Afghanistan in recent months. “Pakistan is a brother of ours, and as a brother Pakistan will do all to help Afghanistan to attain the best levels of safety and security,” Mr. Karzai said during a state visit to Islamabad. “That kind of assurance I have from Pakistan.” Mr. Karzai is seeking a strong commitment from Pakistan to move against Taliban members and others who are active in their opposition to the Afghan government and the American presence in Afghanistan. Mr. Karzai, speaking at a news conference with the Pakistani prime minister, Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali, said that thousands of former Taliban members in Afghanistan could be left alone but that “certain key leaders” had to be apprehended.
