LAST week’s article looked at business security from the perspective of protection primarily against external threats. It outlined the benefits of having a security strategy, so that employees can react to any breach of security in a managed and controlled manner. This week, the focus is the potential for internal security breaches, which reputedly account for 80 per cent of all breaches, and issues surrounding the security of data. The good SME owner will recognise that one of the greatest risks to the integrity of data is unauthorised access to the company’s system. If access is controlled by the use of user IDs and passwords, then unauthorised access should only arise where there is a failure in these controls to operate effectively. Who is responsible for managing the user IDs and passwords in your firm? If the company employs an IT administrator, he or she should be held accountable for reporting regularly on the IT risks that the company faces and the effectiveness of the controls that have been implemented to guard against them.
