Gerry Adams, the leader of the Irish Republican Army’s political wing, told his Sinn Fein party conference that an IRA statement aimed at unlocking the Northern Ireland peace process is final and unambiguous. British Prime Minister Tony Blair and his Irish counterpart Bertie Ahern have indicated that they would like a clearer explanation of the IRA statement, unveiled Sunday, before they launch their own peace proposals. “We gave them (Blair and Ahern) the final copy of the IRA statement,” Adams told the Sinn Fein conference in Newry, in the south of the province. “The (Irish Republican) army’s statement is clear and unambiguous,” he said. “It contains a number of highly significant and positive elements unparalleled in any previous statement by the IRA leadership either at this or any other stage of their struggle,” he said.
