Nepal’s Maoists unveiled their terms for peace yesterday, saying they were willing to put communism on hold if the king and other political forces made similar “sacrifices”. “If we had our way, naturally we would go for communism,” said Baburam Bhattarai, who heads the five-man Maoist negotiating team. But he added his party could settle for less “real, revolutionary democracy” if other forces were also flexible. Asked if that democracy would have a role for the king Mr Bhattarai said: “If he is ready to make the sacrifice in favour of country and people, he may have some role.” He, however, added that it would be best for the king if he abdicated the throne.
