The U.S. military in Afghanistan said on Monday it had not launched any operations specifically targeting Osama bin Laden since the arrest of one of his key lieutenants in Pakistan last week. Speculation that U.S. forces could be closing in on the world’s most wanted man has mounted since Pakistani officials reported the arrest last week of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the suspected mastermind of the September 11, 2001 attacks. Colonel Roger King, spokesman for the 13,000 strong U.S.-led military task force in Afghanistan, said catching bin Laden was not its sole focus, although it could be for other U.S. government agencies. “We are not doing anything specific directed at this individual, but I don’t doubt there are elements of the government working toward that end,” he said, when asked how close U.S. forces were to capturing bin Laden.
