Online service says it blocked 1 billion e-mails in one day. The war on “spam” is escalating. America Online, the nation’s largest online service, said Wednesday that in one day this week it had blocked 1 billion unwanted marketing e-mails from reaching its members. IN THE FIGHT against increasingly aggressive assaults by e-mail marketers, Internet service providers and software developers are devising new technologies and tools to slow the deluge of unsolicited spam. In the newest version of AOL, the online service added a “Report Spam” button to every member in-box so that subscribers can target and filter bulk e-mails from specific addresses of Internet domains. Members are currently sending up to 5.5 million pieces of junk e-mail per day to AOL’s anti-spam engineers, up from about 4 million per day reported less than two weeks ago, the company said.
