Tamil Tiger rebels in Sri Lanka say they have released a government soldier and a policeman in their custody. The move resolves an increasingly bitter dispute that had threatened relations with the international cease fire monitors. A spokesman for the Tigers, Thayamaster told the BBC the two members of the security forces had been handed over to the head of the truce monitoring team during discussions on Thursday in rebel territory. The important step forward is believed to have come after the head of the Sri Lankan Monitoring Mission (SLMM), Trond Furuhovde met with guerrilla leaders and the LTTE chief negotiator on Wednesday.
