The threat of a terrorist attack has forced the police to take extraordinary security measures including sealing off Rajpath and large parts of the India Gate lawns. Senior police officials including police commissioner RS Gupta inspected the arrangements in the area on Monday afternoon. “We fear a terrorist strike is imminent,” said a senior police official. The city has witnessed intensified security arrangements recently. The Delhi police has stopped public movement on Rajpath, on the lawns of India Gate and the Children’s Park located near India Gate. Police tried to play down the security web being woven around the area. However, a senior police officer told the Times of India of the possibility of a terrorist strike on India Gate or Rajpath. “Sealing of certain areas hints at a possible attack either by a rocket launcher or a mobile unit near the monument,” he said. The Times of India on Sunday had reported that an attack on India Gate by ISI-backed terrorists is possible. Reports also suggested that five terrorists belonging to the Lashkar-e-Taiba had entered Delhi. Following the input, two Army battalions were positioned in and around India Gate, including North and South Block. Joint commissioner of police (New Delhi range), BK Gupta, said: “The intensified security arrangement is due to an increased perception of threat.” But, the officer did not specify the nature of the threat.
