Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze says it is possible that some Chechen fighters are still hiding among refugees in Georgia’s remote Pankisi Gorge. In his weekly radio address Monday, the Georgian leader said Georgian forces have launched the second phase of an operation to regain control of the lawless region and prevent the entry of armed groups from neighboring Chechnya and other areas. Mr. Shevardnadze said that in the first phase of the operation in August, the main focus was to force Chechen rebels to leave. Mr. Shevardnadze says finding any remaining Chechen separatists should not be very difficult with the help of information from the American and Russian intelligence services. Full Story
