An information security expert in Toronto has called on governments and organizations to commit to a full-fledged cyber-security enforcement policy. Mary Kirwan, senior director at Kasten Chase, a data security vendor whose software is used by several U.S. government agencies to protect classified information, says that is the only way sophisticated hacking incidents can be halted. Ms. Kirwan says it is frightening — but not surprising — that an enterprising computer hacker successfully accessed and potentially stole a record-setting eight million credit card numbers earlier this month, including 110,000 from Canada. “Hackers are usually motivated by two things. One is the potential for material gain — stealing cards and using them — but the second, which is every bit as great, is to obtain kudos and notoriety in the hacker community.
