Seattle-Tacoma International Airport is not the only airport refusing to comply with a federal directive to pull over and search cars as they approach airport terminals. Officials at Spokane International Airport say they, like their counterparts at the Seattle airport, are concerned that the Washington state constitution prohibits random searches of cars on public roads. “Our interpretation is the same as the Port of Seattle’s,” said Todd Woodard, spokesman for the Spokane airport. “What we agreed to do is have police remain vigilant and perform searches that match probable cause.” For now, Portland International Airport is not conducting the searches. “These searches would be done on public roads, and a police officer needs to have a good reason to stop someone,” said Jeff Fitch, director of airport security at Sea-Tac. No one has been specific about the kinds of things police might be looking for, or about what is happening with negotiations with the federal Transportation Security Administration, which on Feb. 8 instructed local police to begin the searches.
