European airlines face hefty fines for failing to comply with the US anti-terrorism campaign, unless the European Commission can reach agreement with Washington by the end of the month. Washington has called for all transatlantic carriers to give US authorities access to their reservation records. But the Commission says passing on such information could break European Union data protection rules. “There are possibilities to resolve this but it is not going to be easy because the US wants the maximum information possible,” said an EU official. “We’re working on a very short deadline.” US officials were unable to comment. Mindful of the pressures from a looming war in the Gulf, Washington has warned airlines they face fines unless they comply by the end of the month.
