The terrorist threat to London is “of the nature” of the September 11 attacks on New York, Labour Party chairman John Reid has said. The senior minister was speaking as soldiers and police patrolled Heathrow Airport for a second day as part of tighter security across the capital. But closing the world’s busiest airport amid fears of a terror attack was not seriously considered, Home Secretary David Blunkett said. Mr Blunkett said he hoped Britain would “get through the next few days without incident”. He urged the public to be vigilant but not frightened as 1,500 anti-terrorist police and troops remained on guard at the capital’s main airport and roads along the flight paths. The home secretary said it would have been catastrophic to Britain’s trade and industry to close the airport and those “who are threatening us would have been the victors”. Full Story
