An Indonesian army officer on Wednesday publicly acknowledged for the first time that members of the military had been responsible for the death of Theys Eluay, a prominent separatist from the province of Papua. Mr Eluay was killed in November 2001 after returning from a dinner hosted by the Indonesian army’s special forces unit in the Jayapura, the Papuan capital. A police investigation later found the military were likely culprits and western diplomats have since then pointed to the case as a gauge for accountability for the Indonesian military, which has a reputation for human rights abuses.
