The United Nations Security Council has approved a measure supporting the presence of French and West African peacekeepers currently in war-torn Ivory Coast. The 15-nation panel voted unanimously Tuesday to allow the 2,500 French soldiers and hundreds of West African peacekeepers in Ivory Coast to use force to protect civilians. The council also expressed support for a French-brokered peace accord signed in Paris last month that has triggered days of sometimes violent protests in government-controlled areas of Ivory Coast.
