In light of the events in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza over the past week and elsewhere in the Middle East region, the Department is concerned about the potential for further clashes and demonstrations. On Wednesday, October 4, anti-American demonstrations took place in Damascus, Syria where the U.S. Embassy was a target of violent demonstrations. Due to the potential for additional demonstrations against U.S. facilities across the region, all of our embassies and consulates in the region will be closed for public business from Thursday, October 5, through the Columbus Day holiday observed by some posts on Sunday, October 8, and others on Monday, October 9. Embassy employees have been instructed to have their children not attend school during that time. A number of our posts in other regions may suspend or limit services to the public as necessary. American citizens in need of emergency assistance should telephone the U.S. embassy or consulate and ask to speak with the duty officer. Full Story
