Mexico Mining Officials Say Mines A Target Of Organized Crime

“Mexico’s mining sector is becoming a target of organized crime groups, which have carried out kidnappings, robberies and even killings, mining officials said Thursday.

‘The situation is very difficult,’ said Ramon Davila, director of the First Majestic mining company, during a mining forum. ‘There have been threats by organized crime.’

He said that mining camps in isolated areas with several hundred well-paid workers are an attractive target.

‘At times, there is not a rapid response [by authorities] and this makes these gangs stronger,’ said Davila.”
