“Gunmen killed a Yemeni intelligence officer in the flashpoint southern province of Lahij, a security official said on Saturday.
‘Armed men ambushed the chief of the Lahij intelligence service’s investigations department, Colonel Ali Abdul Kareem al-Ban, who was killed in a hail of bullets,’ the official told AFP.
The attack took place on Friday evening in Hamra village near the town of Hutah where security forces were swiftly deployed, witnesses said.
The forces later arrested up to eight supporters of the Southern Movement, a source from the coalition of groups wanting greater autonomy or independence for the region said on Saturday.
Ban had survived several assassination attempts in the past few months after interrogating numerous provincial Southern Movement leaders, a local official told AFP.”
