Hurricane Otis, a powerful Category 5 hurricane, has made landfall on the coast of southern Mexico, near the Acapulco resort. The storm brought wind speeds of up to 165 mph (270 km/h) and has triggered warnings of life-threatening storm surges and landslides due to heavy rainfall. The hurricane began to weaken as it moved inland, causing power outages in the affected areas. The rapid intensification of Hurricane Otis from a tropical storm into a Category 5 hurricane was unusual and marked a record for the fastest intensification rate over a 12-hour period in the Eastern Pacific. This event follows previous flooding and damage caused by tropical storms and hurricanes in the region earlier in the month.
