Israel carries out ‘wide-scale strikes’ on Iranian forces in Syria
Following Iranian missile fire into Israel, the Israeli military responded by hitting dozens of government and allied Iranian targets in Syria. Syria stated that only two civilians died, but other sources claim the death toll was much higher. Civilians shared photos of fires and videos of explosions on social media. Earlier this week, Israel stated that it had intercepted four rockets coming from Syria, stopped by the Iron Dome military defense mechanism.
Since the Syrian civil war broke out in 2011, Israel has carried out hundreds of attacks against them, trying to thwart Iranian military entrenchment and stop imports of weaponry to the Hezbollah group. However, yesterday’s strike was one of the largest to date, and Israeli military officials stated that they ramped up their retaliation to Syria’s attacks due to a previous warning from Israel that Syria ignored. Russia, who backs Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the civil war, condemned the airstrikes.
