New research by Comparitech highlight the impact of data breaches on company stock prices. On average, share prices dropped by 7.27% following the disclosure of a data breach, although it sometimes took 14 market days or longer for the impact of the news to be fully reflected in the share price.
Affected companies tended to continue under performing in the first three years after the breach was announced, even if share prices appeared to recover shortly after the incident. However, Comparitech acknowledges that the results of the study might be biased because the sample size was rather small.
