A new Cisco Talos report shows that threat actors are trying to take advantage of the strong opinions many people hold regarding prominent political figures by distributing various types of malware using the names of people like US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
According to the researchers, the study shows that “adversaries will go to any lengths and use anything they deem advantageous, from pop culture to political references — everything is fair game.” In this case the political themes were not used for disinformation purposes, but merely as lures to get people to interact with certain attachments or links that would result in ransomware, backdoors or other malware being installed on their systems.
