Four months after seemingly shutting down, the notorious Emotet botnet is once again being used to distribute spam, security researchers at SpamHaus warn. The new campaign involves emails with malicious links or attachments targeting Polish and German-speaking users.
In May of this year, the command and control (C&C) servers of the powerful botnet unexpectedly went offline, leading to speculation within the infosec community that law enforcement may have finally managed to nuke the powerful botnet. However, when the servers came back online at the end of August, security analysts expected that it wouldn’t be long before a new campaign was launched.
