8.4TB in email metadata exposed in university data leak

A leaky ElasticSearch database exposed 8.4TB worth of email metadata belonging to Shanghai Jiao Tong University, a security researcher with Cloudflare discovered on May 22.

The unsecured database contained 9.5 billion rows of data and was actively being used when the researcher found it through a Shodan search. Shodan is a search engine for Internet-facing devices. The researcher says that most of the data related to the email communications of “a specific person.” When the researcher informed the university about the leak, the issue was fixed within 24 hours.
