Even though the US Department of Defense is considering to send extra troops to the Middle East as a result of escalating tensions with Iran, President Donald Trump on Thursday stated that he doesn’t think those troops will be needed.
Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan said that his department is considering its options for “[enhancing] force protection in the Middle East,” which “may involve sending additional troops.” However, he denied Wednesday reports claiming that between 5,000 to 10,000 forces may be deployed.
Tensions between the US and Iran have risen dramatically in recent weeks after the US imposed new sanctions on Iran. The deteriorating situation is fueling global worries about a possible military conflict between the two countries.
