Syrian Government Starts Campaign to Retake Last Opposition Stronghold of Idlib
Supported by Russia and Iran, the Syrian army has launched a final push for Idlib Province, the last province in Syria still controlled by opposition forces. It therefore seems more certain than ever that the Syrian civil war, which began in 2011, will be decided in favor of president Bashar al-Assad.
However, the real question is what Assad will do once his forces recapture Idlib. While the Syrian president undoubtedly wishes to recapture the entire territory of Syria, this would require him to deal with the US-backed coalition that governs northeastern Syria and the Turkish forces that control the northern borderlands. So far Assad an his allies have refrained from challenging the foreign troops in these parts.
