On Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un met in Russia to discuss bilateral relations and the situation on the Korean peninsula. The talks are part of a two-day summit between the two leaders who are meeting each other for the first time. Putin described the first two-hour talks as “a substantive discussion,” while Kim spoke of “very meaningful” discussions.
After the failed February summit between the US and North Korea, Kim will be seeking to get the kind of support from Moscow that will boost his country’s devastated economy, which is subject to stringent US and international sanctions. The US has said that it will not lift sanctions until North Korea gets rid of its nuclear program.
