The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has released a new report[pdf] showing that in the first quarter of 2019, NATO and pro-government troops in Afghanistan were responsible for more civilian deaths than Taliban fighters.
While pro-government forces killed 305 civilians, the Taliban and other insurgent groups killed 227. 145 civilian deaths were attributed to air strikes, while 72 civilians were killed in ground search operations by Afghan, pro-government forces. It is the first time since the beginning of the war of 17 years that pro-government forces killed more civilians than insurgents. The shocking finding has prompted UNAMA to call for an investigation into the matter.
