Finance Remains Most Attacked Sector Globally Six of the Past Seven Years
A new NTT security report shows that 17% of all cyberattacks in the past year targeted the financial sector. The technology sector also accounted for 17% of attacks in 2018, but finance has been the most targeted industry for 6 of the last 7 years. Other highly targeted industries were education (11% of attacks, up from 4%) and government (9% of attacks, up from 5%).
Almost one-third of all attacks (32%) were web attacks. The financial sector, which is especially vulnerable to these types of attacks, accounted for 46% of web attacks. The researchers furthermore claim that cryptomining malware, i.e. software that hijacks the processing power of infected systems in order to mine cryptocurrency, is “leading the evolution of malware.”
