Why 61% of CIOs believe employees maliciously leak data

New research by Opinion Matters and Egress shows that CIOs are very concerned about insider threats. 8 out of ten (79%) CIOs think that employees accidentally exposed sensitive company data in the past year and 6 out of ten executives (61%) believe that malicious insiders exposed data in that same period. However, only 30% of respondents believe that insiders intended to hurt the organization by exposing data.

Another striking finding is that one in five employees believe themselves to be the rightful owners of data instead of their organization. As a result, some employees take valuable data with them when they change jobs. In the US, 11% of employees do this, while the number for UK staff is far higher (29%).
