A new report by the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD) and the Chertoff Group highlights the importance of private and public sector cooperation in the fight against cyberattacks. As part of the research, business executives and former top-level government officials participated in a tabletop exercise. In the scenario, heightened geopolitical tensions between the US and a powerful adversary prompted the deployment of US military forces overseas. While tensions rose, a large-scale cyberattack targeted critical, consumer and military infrastructure in the US.
The research found that in order to properly address such an attack, which could come from adversaries like China, Russia, Iran or North Korea, the US government and the private sector need to have an arrangement in place that allows for the immediate sharing of classified information relating to resources and response strategies.
