While facial recognition has received most of the attention when it comes to artificial intelligence and tracking humans through advanced technology, it is not the only technology for the job. In fact, it is often not the best technology for the job as it relies on access to facial features which are often not available in a crowd, due to camera angles, or in bad lighting. Overcoming these major obstacles to facial recognition technology, researchers have developed a deep learning AI that recognizes individuals through their body movement within a crowd. They have produced 99% accuracy in tests with zebrafish and flies, but have described the technology as “species agnostic,” suggesting immediate applicability with humans.
