The ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Eastern DRC has spread to a new area, located between the two already-infected zones. The outbreak has reached nearly 300 confirmed cases as attacks on health workers by militia’s have made access and treatment of many areas nearly impossible. This security challenge remains the greatest threat to further spread of the disease, which is on its way to becoming the largest Ebola outbreak in the country’s history. The case in a new district came from the husband of a confirmed Ebola fatality; the man allegedly refused follow-up and a transfer to an Ebola treatment center. He then died at a community health center where procedures for reducing spread of infection are often not followed.
