“Russian Columbine”: Crimea college shooting rampage shocks Russia, stokes tensions
In what Russian media outlets are calling “Russia’s Columbine,” an 18-year-old gunman killed 20 people and wounded over 50 in a suicide rampage that employed a firearm and at least one homemade explosive device. A motive has not yet been established. This school shooting is the deadliest to occur in Russia since the 2004 school occupation by Chechen separatists that left over 300 dead. Russia and Ukraine have been trading accusations for their roll in generating this kind of violence, while Putin has stated that the shooting was the “result of globalization” and that “everything started with the tragic events in schools in the US.”
