The UK Home Office Minister recently stated at the country’s National Security Summit that “chemical and biological weapons are marching in closer,” and that terrorists “have developed and worked on a better arsenal and we have to be prepared that might come to our streets here.” The Metropolitan Police Assistant commissioner also argued, referring to chemical and biological weapons, that “these things have been used on the battlefield, and what’s used on the battlefield will eventually be adapted to be used on domestic soil.” Risk assessments of such attacks have been named less likely than traditional extremist attacks using firearms or explosives, but the national risk register of civil emergencies does state that “extremists remain interested in CBRN materials” that could be used to injure and kill people through the contamination of people, animals, buildings, water, and food.
